Michigan still bans manufacturers from selling cars directly. Tesla gets around it under a 2020 settlement: you order online, a Tesla subsidiary handles delivery and service in Michigan, and the car is first titled out of state before being registered here. Rivian and Lucid remain blocked.
From January 2026 Michigan charges EVs $267 a year on top of registration, the highest EV fee in the country, as part of a road funding deal. The utilities soften it: DTE and Consumers Energy each pay $500 toward a Level 2 home charger if you sign up for their overnight rate, and $1,000 for income-qualified Consumers customers.

Michigan charges a flat 6% sales tax with no local add-on. A trade-in allowance reduces the taxable amount up to a cap that rises each year. Base prices are Tesla’s US prices as reported on 2026-10-26 (tesla.com could not be checked directly). Tax is applied to price plus fees, which is a simplification: title, registration and local fees are extra. Every trim and state is in Tesla price by state.
