For years New Jersey was one of the cheapest places to buy a Tesla because zero-emission vehicles paid no sales tax. That exemption was phased out: half rate from October 2024 and the full 6.625% from July 2025, so a Model Y Standard now costs about $2,750 more here than it did two years ago.
New Jersey still has one of the few working state purchase incentives in the country. Charge Up New Jersey reopened for fiscal year 2027 on July 1, 2026 with $1,500 at the point of sale, and up to $4,000 for income-qualified buyers, on cars with an MSRP up to $55,000. Model 3 and Model Y are on the eligible list, though the program pays through participating dealerships, so confirm how a Tesla order is handled before you count on it.

For 2025 to 2028, buyers who finance a new US-assembled vehicle for personal use can deduct up to $10,000 a year of loan interest, phasing out at higher incomes. Model 3 and Model Y sold in the US are assembled in California or Texas. Confirm your eligibility with a tax professional.
