For years Washington exempted part of the price of a new EV under $45,000 from sales tax, which made the Model 3 a standout here. That exemption was written to expire on July 31, 2025, so do not count on it without checking the Department of Revenue first. The table below uses the full 6.5% state rate.
What Washington still has is some of the cheapest electricity in the country, thanks to hydro power. Seattle City Light and other public utilities charge a fraction of California rates, which makes running costs very low. In return, EVs pay extra annual fees at registration.
