At $39,490 the Model 3 undercuts every comparable EV sold in Canada. Here is where the others win, and where they do not.

The short version

  • The Model 3 is $9,000 to $28,000 cheaper than the other four before any rebate.
  • The Equinox EV is the only rival that can claw back ground with the $5,000 federal rebate; it is still about $4,000 more after it.
  • The Ioniq 6 has the longest range; the i4 has the nicest cabin; nobody matches the Supercharger network.

Where the Model 3 wins

Price. Since Tesla moved Canadian supply to Giga Shanghai, the Model 3 RWD Premium starts at $39,490. The next cheapest car here, the Equinox EV, is about $9,000 more before the federal rebate and roughly $4,000 more after it. Against the Ioniq 6 and Polestar 2 the gap is $15,000 or more; against the i4 it is more than $20,000. That difference pays for a home charger, winter tires and several years of electricity.

Charging on the road. The Supercharger network is still the largest and most reliable fast-charging network in Canada, and it is the only one built into the car's navigation with automatic preconditioning. Other brands are gaining adapter access, but the experience is not the same yet.

Software. Over-the-air updates, the app, Sentry Mode and the option of Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Ordering through a referral link also gets you three months of FSD free.

Where the others win

  • Range: the Ioniq 6 Long Range RWD is rated around 580 km, well ahead of the Model 3 RWD's 463 km. If you drive long highway stretches in winter, that margin matters. See our real-world winter range test.
  • Space: the Equinox EV is a compact SUV with a hatch; the Model 3 is a sedan with a trunk. For car seats and hockey bags the Chevrolet is simply bigger inside.
  • Interior: the BMW i4 and Polestar 2 feel more conventional and more luxurious, with physical controls and instrument clusters.
  • Rebates: eligible Equinox EV trims qualify for the federal program; the $39,490 Model 3 does not. Our rebate guide explains why it is still the cheaper car.

Our take

If the budget is under $45,000, the Model 3 is the only one of these you can actually buy, and it is a very good car at that price. If you need an SUV, cross-shop the Equinox EV after the rebate. If you want maximum range, drive an Ioniq 6. If money is not the question, the i4 is the nicer place to sit. For most Canadian buyers the decision comes down to the $39,490 Model 3 versus the roughly $43,400 post-rebate Equinox EV, and the Supercharger network settles it for a lot of people.
